We're sure you've heard by now that our tentative agreement has been ratified by a vote of 86% last Friday. We're grateful that so many of you apparently agree we did all we could do without a vicious labour disruption, and regret that we didn't meet the expectations of all.
Pursuit of excellence
We still face many sobering challenges. Our business is in genuine peril. Our livelihood, and the future of our newspaper, depends in part on nimble, smart decisions by senior Star management during the months and years to come. We intend to press them to avoid easy shortcuts, to help protect our precious brand by investing in excellence, to revere the Atkinson Principles as a sound business strategy as well as a corporate and social policy.
With the voluntary severance packages now on offer, we all know there will be fewer of us here to insist on excellence today and to resist any renewed company assault on our wages, benefits and working conditions in three years time. We urge you all to take a more active interest in your union - to attend meetings, bring problems and good ideas to your stewards and us, to consider being a steward yourself. Invest in your union - you are going to need it more than ever in the months and years to come.
In the meantime, we face immediate challenges with complex training agendas in Editorial and Pre-Press. We have much to sort out in the wake of the new contract provisions and changes. And we still face many workaday issues as our industry responds to these difficult times. We'll be there for you, but we need your help to be smart in what we do to protect your interests and the legitimate needs of our newspaper.
Let us again offer our heartfelt appreciation for this month's surge of support behind our bargaining efforts. You selfless folks on the Action Committee are amazing. We haven't seen a unified mood like that in our workplace for a long time. It felt pretty good, didn't it?
Thank you very much for standing together.
