Talks Resume

Holiday over
We hope you had a most relaxing holiday break and that the kids are safely back in school. It's a good thing we all had a bit of a break; these next two weeks are going to be rather intense.

Bargaining again
We were scheduled to resume bargaining with the company on Monday Jan. 7. We'll be at it all week. Then mediator George Adams is scheduled to join us Monday Jan. 14, for what looms as a potential make-or-break five days of intensive bargaining. That brings us to Friday Jan. 18. Given the company's bid to radically damage what it has meant to work at The Star, we expect things to come down to the wire.

Guild website
A lockout or strike is a very real possibility, as much as everyone wants to avoid a dispute. Your Guild Action Committee has launched a new website, www.wearethestar.ca. We are the Star, eh? It's a bit corny but it's also very true - we are the heart and soul of our paper, not Rob Prichard and the rest.

We suggest you bookmark this site on your home computer or handheld, as you'll probably be using it a lot. What will strike pay be? What am I expected to do? Can my strike pay be deposited electronically? What can Starnews Credit Union do for me? These and many other issues are addressed. The site will also be used for breaking news. If you don't find answers there, you can email your question to info@wearethestar.ca.

Meeting call
Please note our strike vote will be held, after we give you an up-to-the-minute update on negotiations, on Wednesday January 16 at 5 p.m., Westin Hotel. See you all there.
